Officials reported on Tuesday that a wildfire, started in the northwestern part of the Corfu in eight separate locations. The most serious of the blazes were in the regions of Troumbeta, Lakones, Alleimatades and Makrades. A strong fire-fighting force made up of 40 firemen, 20 vehicles, two teams of fire-fighters on foot, six water-bombing aircraft and two helicopters has been deployed to put out the fires.
The flames are burning through forest and farm land, without threatening any inhabited areas so far. The flames are moving rapidly, however, as they are fanned by the strong force five winds blowing in the region. According to the state news agency, the fire fighting officials have not yet confirmed whether or not arson is involved, though the large number of starting points makes this seem a likely possibility.
