Athens Mayor George Kaminis said today that Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) is going to be returned to the citizens of Athens over the next few days. Although peaceful protesters have set up tents and have been living there permanently since demonstrations began on May 25, Kaminis claims that the peaceful protestors there are nothing but homeless people, drug users and dropouts.
You are indeed something else Mr. Kaminis. I would not bet for a second term if I was you, have made enough people in Athens loathe you already.
Meanwhile, press reports said that Chief public prosecutor Eleni Raikou has ordered for the Syntagma “tents” case to be thoroughly investigated because the tents continue to remain on the square. Currently the prosecutor is looking to see if there is a crime in the illegal settlement of tents in public spaces and if necessary, Raikou will ask that the ones responsible be prosecuted even if it is without a warrant.
Some may remember that Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said at the beginning of the month that he wanted the indignants to stop camping out there.
On his part, Justice Minister Miltiadis Papaioannou said that the “gypsy tents in Syntagma (Consitution Square) make for an unacceptable sight,” while the spokesman for the Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) party, Costas Aivaliotis, used the same term to refer to the protesters’ camp and called on authorities to also remove refugees who have been protesting in front of Athens University since last year.
But the protesters will not budge, and for good reason! They continue to voice concerns about the state of Greek politics as well as their anger at the austerity measures being adopted by the government as a result of its loan agreement with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
What a democracy we have… e? They decide and we have to abide… No wonder people are pelting politicians with anything they can get their hands on, from yogurt to water bottles.
The protestors at Syntagma Square mister Kaminis shall and will remain there, for they are our only hope and inspiration.
