Greece’s Panathinaikos basketball team won the Euroleague basketball cup yesterday for the sixth time in its history (third in the last five years) after beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 78-70 in an exciting game that was held at the Palau Sant Jordi Arena in Barcelona. It was Panathinikos’ tenth presence in the Euroleague’s final four competition. (Watch video at bottom of post).
Point guard Dimitris Diamantidis scored 16 points and added nine assists to lead Panathinaikos to its sixth European title. The green team used a strong third quarter to build a double-digit lead and then withstood a late run from the Israeli team in the fourth, while the 10-minute intervals had the following results: 15-22, 30-33, 43-54, 70-78.
It is Panathinaikos’ third title in five years and puts the Greek team level with CSKA Moscow in second place on the all-time list behind Real Madrid’s eight continental crowns. It was coach Zeljko Obradovic’s eighth European title and fourth with Panathinaikos.
